100% Biobased Anti-Redeposition Agent: A New Step Forward for Powder Detergents

A specialty chemicals supplier has introduced carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — a common anti-redeposition additive in powder detergents — with a 100% renewable carbon index, described as the first product of its kind in the industry to reach this level. It marks a notable technical step in the broader trend of gradually replacing petroleum-derived ingredients in detergent formulations with renewable raw materials.

The Role of CMC in Powder Detergent

CMC is a water-soluble anionic polymer derived from renewable cellulose, widely used in powder detergents mainly as an anti-redeposition agent. During washing, dirt and grease particles are lifted off fabric fibers, but without proper stabilization, they can reattach to the fabric surface, dulling its appearance and reducing overall cleanliness. CMC works by keeping these loosened soil particles suspended in the wash water, ensuring they are rinsed away completely rather than redepositing on the fabric — helping keep clothes cleaner, preserving fabric brightness, and maintaining consistent washing performance across different water conditions.

Raw Material Source and Production Process

The new product is made primarily from natural wood-based cellulose, combined with ISCC Plus-certified monochloroacetic acid produced at the company's facility in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The result is a CMC derived entirely from renewable carbon sources. The company says the product can directly replace conventional synthetic ingredients without compromising performance — in some cases even matching or exceeding it.

In terms of practical application, the product is designed to integrate into existing powder detergent formulations with minimal reformulation — an important factor that helps manufacturers reduce the cost and time needed to adapt their production lines when adopting a new raw material.

Context: Pressure to Cut Carbon Footprints and New EU Regulation

According to the company, demand from consumer brand owners to reduce product carbon footprints while maintaining the cleaning performance consumers expect has reached unprecedented levels. This development aligns with tightening regulatory trends in Europe: under Regulation (EU) 2026/405 on detergents — the new legal framework replacing the regulation that had been in place since 2004 — biodegradability requirements are no longer limited to surfactants as before, but now extend to a broader range of polymers and other organic ingredients in product formulations, including water-soluble polymers similar to CMC. Although the regulation sets separate implementation timelines for different ingredient categories, running out to 2032-2034, the broader trend suggests that detergent raw material suppliers are proactively getting ahead of these requirements well in advance.
